Don’t forget the 2011 Photo competition.

As it says in the magazine send your entires to me or post a message here with a link to something like flickr to enter.

South Wales Rally 2011

Contributed by Christopher Hill

After circulating all the SOA members whose boats are based in Wales, the original intention was to hold a rally in Aberystwyth with Dulcibella II coming up from Milford, Pascanale coming from Cardigan and Annie Gunn coming down from Pwllheli. However, Harry and Sandra Foster in Annie Gunn was unable to make it after all and so the rally was switched to Solva, so that Jonathan and Carol Pearce in Aurial could make it. They were coming back from an Irish cruise on the Saturday and expected to be in Solva at about 6pm.

Well, on the Friday the forecast was for NW F5-6 and this would make it difficult for Pascanale coming down from Cardigan, around Strumble Head, St. David’s Head and through Ramsey Sound. Additionally, Dulcibella II would have to navigate Jack Sound or go around the outside of Skomer, equally daunting in strong winds! So the decision was made for Alan and Christine Cooper of Pascanale and David and Andrea Hill of Dulcibella II to turn up by car!

Early Saturday, David received an sms message from Jonathan to say that they had set off from Kilmore Quay at 6am and were on their way! We were somewhat relieved to hear that they had arrived in Solva after 10 hours! Jonathan and Carol with their crew Pete (Badger) and Sue had had an exciting (to say the least) sail. They had F6 winds which increased to F7 and especially near the South Bishop lighthouse, the waves were quite something. Aurial made the crossing with just the (full) main up, no jib or mizzen (Aurial is a 105 ketch rig Southerly).

Alan, Christine, David and Andrea were awaiting Aurial’s crew when they came ashore at Solva’s slip and we all went off to the Harbour Inn and had a very convivial time over dinner.

One day, the weather will be kind to us and we will be able to hold a proper rally somewhere on the West Welsh coast. However, despite the weather this year we all enjoyed ourselves and Jonathan and Carol and crew were real heroes making the trip from Ireland to be there.

Poole rally

Andrew Constance has published the draft details for Poole 2011:

This year we plan a slightly different format for the Rally.

We plan to meet at Studland on the 2/09 and for those who want we can go ashore to the Bankers Arms for supper. If, as can be the case at the beginning of September, the weather is not so good then we will go either to South Deep or Poole Yacht Club depending on conditions.

On the Saturday night moorings will be arranged at Poole Yacht Club and there will be Pimms/Drinks reception on the Pontoon followed by a BBQ using the club’s facilities and equipment, but bringing your own food for cooking.

There will also be an informal cruise in company leaving on the Sunday for Weymouth for any one who’s interested.

More details to follow in due course but in the meantime please can you let me know if you are planning to take part in the Rally or informal cruise.

Please contact Andrew direct for more information.
